Allt detta handlar om nyanser, perspektiv, synvinklar / All this is about shades, perspectives, perspectives.

During my search for alternative lifestyles and other types of family structures than the nuclear family I came in contact with a group of nuns reciding at Rögle Convent 11 km east of Lund. What first began as a classic photoshoot came to be an investigation into the thematic and technical values of photographic practice.

One of the nuns gave me a box of undeveloped photo paper which had been left at the convent. The belief in the importance of living without material belongings and the value a gift is given led to a series of portraits. Together with a letter from one of the nuns and a number of collected artifacts from the monastery, a history of images is built.

In the project I have tried to make more voices than my own heard by choosing to include a letter from one of the sisters. In the letter correspondence, I try to understand the life of her and the other nuns, while she tryes to understand the photographic and artistic process that I represent. The title is a quote from that mail correspondence. She talks about the balancing act of defining "the other". The quote fits well in both the photographic technical process but also the documentary photography's great dilemma; to depict subjects in a fair and ethical manner.
